Privacy Policy
Summary: Editor Studio edits your photos and videos on your phone, and they are never uploaded to us or anyone else. On iPhone, Editor Studio doesn't collect, store or share any of your personal data. On Android, your photos, videos and recordings also stay on your phone, but Google's ML Kit, which the Cutout tool uses, sends Google technical information about how it performs (see Editor Studio for Android below). The app has no accounts and no ads.
Information We Collect
On iPhone, none. Editor Studio (shown as "Editor" on your Home Screen) does not collect your name, email, phone number, location, contacts or any identifier. It contains no analytics or advertising tools, and it does not send your photos, videos, sound or anything else to us or to anyone else over the internet.
On Android, the app itself collects nothing either, and your photos, videos and sound are never sent anywhere. Google's ML Kit, which the Cutout tool uses, sends Google the technical information described in Editor Studio for Android, including identifiers for the app installation and device. We never receive it.
Your Photos, Videos and Sound
- Choosing what to edit: you pick photos and videos with your phone's own photo picker (Apple's on iPhone, Android's on Android). The app receives only the items you pick and cannot see the rest of your library.
- Your projects: to keep your originals unchanged, the app keeps a copy of each item you edit, together with your edits, in its own storage on your phone. Songs and sounds you add to My Sounds are stored the same way. They stay on your phone until you delete the project or sound, or delete the app.
- Saving: finished edits are added to your library when you tap Save, and photos and videos you take with the app's camera are added automatically. On iPhone this uses add-only access to Photos, so the app can add to your library but not read it. On Android they go to the Editor Studio folder in Pictures or Movies, which needs no permission to read your gallery.
- Sharing: when you tap Share, you choose where your photo or video goes. The app or service you share to handles it under its own privacy policy.
- Backups: on iPhone, like other app data, your projects may be included in your iPhone's iCloud or computer backup, which Apple manages under its own terms. On Android, see Editor Studio for Android.
Processing on Your Phone
Every feature runs on your phone: looks, Magic, adjustments, background removal (Cutout), Auto Captions, voice effects and Text to Speech. On iPhone, Auto Captions uses your iPhone's on-device speech recognition, so the sound of your video is not sent to us or to Apple's servers. For Android, see Editor Studio for Android.
Permissions on iPhone
The app asks for each of these only when you first use the feature that needs it (for Android, see Editor Studio for Android):
- Camera: to take photos and videos, and to record you for Screen + You.
- Microphone: to record voiceovers and the sound of your videos.
- Photos (add only): to save your captures and finished edits to your library.
- Speech Recognition: on some iPhones, to write Auto Captions. Recognition runs on your iPhone.
You can turn any of these off at any time in the Settings app, under Apps, then Editor.
Crash Reports from Apple and Google Play
If you have chosen to share analytics with app developers (Settings, then Privacy & Security, then Analytics & Improvements), Apple may send us anonymous crash reports and usage statistics. They do not identify you, and we use them only to fix problems in the app. On Android, if you have chosen to share usage and diagnostics with Google, Google Play may likewise give us anonymous crash and performance reports.
Children's Privacy
We do not collect personal information from anyone, including children under 13. On Android, the technical information ML Kit sends goes to Google, as described in Editor Studio for Android.
Keeping and Deleting Your Data
We hold none of your data, so there is nothing to delete on our side. To remove everything the app stores on your phone, delete your projects in the Projects tab, or delete the app. Uninstalling Editor Studio on Android removes its projects from your phone.
Editor Studio for Android
Everything above about your photos, videos, recordings and text also applies on Android. They are edited on your phone and are never uploaded to us or anyone else. Auto Captions uses your phone's on-device speech recognition (Android 13 and later), so the sound of your video stays on your phone. Text to Speech uses the text-to-speech engine set on your phone. Some of that engine's voices may need an internet connection; that is decided by the engine, and its own privacy policy applies.
Google ML Kit. The Cutout tool finds the subject of a picture with Google's ML Kit, which runs on your phone and doesn't send your pictures to Google. ML Kit does send Google technical information about how the tool performs: device model and Android version, app version, how long the tool took, settings such as picture size, error codes, and identifiers for the app installation and device. Google uses this to measure, fix and improve ML Kit and to detect misuse. See Google's Privacy Policy. We never receive this information. The Cutout model is downloaded by Google Play services.
Permissions on Android. Camera (the camera in Create, and Screen + You) and Microphone (sound for your videos, voiceovers, and Android's speech recognition for Auto Captions) are asked for only when you use those features. You can turn them off in Settings > Apps > Editor > Permissions. Photos and videos are chosen with Android's photo picker, so Editor Studio can't see the rest of your gallery.
Backups. Your projects are not included in Android's cloud backup. Small settings, such as your teleprompter script, may be included in your own Google backup if you have it turned on. That backup is end-to-end encrypted when your phone has a screen lock.
Changes to This Policy
If we change this policy, the latest version will always be on this page with a new "Last updated" date. If the app ever starts collecting any data, this policy will say so before that version is released.
